How to Make a Truck More Fuel Efficient

Trucks are not the most fuel efficient vehicles on the road today. With all of the emissions, high gas prices and pollution, finding was to make a truck more fuel efficient helps alleviate multiple problems. There are simple things you can do to your truck right in your own driveway that can make it more fuel efficient today. You can make a truck more fuel efficient with small upgrades and changes that are inexpensive to do.

  • Reduce the weight of your truck. More weight means more work for the truck's engine. This uses more gas. Take out anything that is unnecessary and don't haul things in the bed of the truck that you don't really need.

  • Change the oil and use a fully synthetic oil and new filter at each oil change. Synthetic oil keeps the engine cooler and reduces the work that the engine takes to run.

  • Watch the way you drive the truck. Hard, frequent braking cuts into the fuel usage. Quick and hard accelerating does this also. Press on the breaks in advance of a stop, pressing them to the floor gently until stopping. Accelerate easily rather than "hitting" the gas.

  • Install a cold air intake system. A cold intake system is not an expensive accessory and can be found at almost any auto parts store. This replaces the stock air system with a system that pulls more cold air into the engine, raising the engine's fuel efficiency.
