How to Change Rear Brake Lights on a 2002 Chrysler Town & Country

The 2002 Chrysler Town and Country is a minivan with accessible tail light fixtures. A rear light bulb will need to be replaced whenever it burns out; occasionally, the light fixture will also need replacing, especially if it is cracked due to a fender bender accident. Fortunately, replacing both of these parts is a straightforward process for both the left and right side of the vehicle. With tools found in nearly any home set, you'll have this job finished in under an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Needle-nosed pliers
  • Replacement light fixture
  • Replacement light bulb

Replace the Light Bulb

  • Open the rear door of the Town and Country.

  • Locate the two plastic plugs that hold the light fixture in place. Wedge the flat end of the flat-head screwdriver underneath a plug and pry it loose on all sides of the plug. Grip the plug with the needle-nosed pliers and pull it out of the socket. Repeat this process for the other plug.

  • Gently pull the light fixture away from its mounting socket. Don't pull too hard, as it is still connected to the Town and Country by wires.

  • Press down and pull on the two tabs that attach the light bulb socket to the light fixture.

  • Pull the light bulb out of the light bulb socket. No twisting or bending is necessary. A simple straight pull will release the bulb. Compare the old bulb to the new, checking for similar width and height. Place the new bulb in the socket, replace the socket in the fixture and the fixture to the mounting space on the rear of the Town and Country, using the two plugs removed earlier, to keep the fixture in place.

Replace the Light Fixture

  • Open the rear door of the Town and Country and take out the retaining plugs in the same manner as described in Section 1.

  • Look for the red tab that locks the wire plug into the wire socket on the inside of the light fixture. Press this red tab down (toward the light bulbs), using the head of the flat-head screwdriver. Press against the gray part of the wire plug and pull it straight out of the wire socket.

  • Compare the old light fixture to the new one, checking for the same number of light bulb sockets, the same size wire socket and the same overall shape. Slip the wire plug from the minivan into the wire socket, pressing firmly to ensure a solid fit. Slip the new light fixture into the fender and then clasp the fixture to the Town and Country, using the plastic plugs.
