Sometimes a vehicle's starter doesn't give you any warning before it goes out, you just go outside to crank it and nothing happens. Most people would immediately call a mechanic, but the 1993 Honda Del Sol is one of the easiest vehicles to change a starter in yourself. A weekend mechanic, willing to invest a half an hour or less, can do the job with a minimal amount of tools and effort, saving themselves quite a few dollars in the process.
When buying the starter, be sure you know your engine size. The 1993 Honda Del Sol had a 1.5-liter in the base S model while the sportier Si had a 1.6-liter.
Park the car on level ground and set the parking brake.
Using a wrench or ratchet and socket, disconnect the negative battery cable and lay it to the side, being careful not to let it touch metal and ground out.
Disconnect the positive battery cable and lay it to the side.
The starter is mounted on top of the engine and has two bolts holding it in, as well as a wire leading from the battery. Using the wrench or a ratchet and socket, remove the lead wire first, then the mounting bolts, and remove the starter from the engine compartment.
Place the new starter in place and tighten the two retaining bolts, then reattach the cable from the battery. Use the ratchet and socket or the wrench to tighten all three. Do not over-tighten the bolt holding the wire lead, or you risk breaking the solenoid case.
Reconnect the positive battery cable.
Reconnect the negative battery cable.
