How to Adjust the Emergency Brake for Rear Disc Brakes on a Nissan 240SX

The Nissan 240SX comes equipped with four wheel disc brakes. The rear disc brakes feature an actuator caliper design that provides an emergency brake function when the actuator is rotated by the emergency brake lever and cable assembly. The calipers in this system are self adjusting, but cannot compensate for the stretch that occurs in the emergency brake cables. Adjusting the emergency brake cables will restore proper function to the system.

Things You'll Need

  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • 1/4-inch drive deep socket set
  • Place wheel chocks behind the front wheels. The Nissan 240SX is a rear wheel drive car. When the rear wheels are raised off the ground, the car is free to roll backwards. Wheel chocks are a mandatory safety item when raising this vehicle. Lift the rear of the Nissan until the rear wheels are off the ground with a floor jack and place jack stands under the rear frame. Lower the 240SX onto the jack stands.

  • Remove the center console by using a screwdriver to remove the retaining screws that attach the console to the transmission tunnel, and lifting it up and over the parking brake lever. Remove the parking brake lever cover and pull up on the lever six to eight clicks. Six to eight clicks should lock the wheels. Try to spin the rear wheels. If the wheels move with hand force, adjust the parking brake lever. Lower the parking brake lever. Turn the 10mm adjuster nut that attaches the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever clockwise. This nut is located on the cable stud angled forward at the base of the lever assembly. Tighten the nut until the lever meets strong resistance to movement after six clicks.

  • Apply the parking brake and check the rear wheels again, to see if they are locked down. Replace the lever cover, the console and lower the rear of the car. Test drive to verify.
