How to Remove Paint Scrapes

When someone else bumps their car into yours in the parking lot, oftentimes the only reminder they'll leave is the paint marks on your car. If you're ready to take your car to the dealer, try your hand at removing those paint scrapes yourself, especially if you're on a budget. Minor scratches won't take much time, while even a large area can be tackled in a couple of hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Cotton rags
  • Acetone
  • Soap
  • Water
  • Rubbing compound
  • Pour a small amount of acetone onto a clean cotton rag, then wipe the paint scratches with the rag. If the scratches are light and recently occurred, they may lift right off.

  • Wash the affected area with soapy water to remove traces of the acetone. Examine the paint to see if you need to continue working on the area or if all traces have been removed.

  • Dry the area that's been scratched with a clean cotton towel.

  • Pour a quarter-sized amount of rubbing compound onto a clean cotton rag and work the rubbing compound over the paint scratches in small concentric circles. The rubbing compound strips away a fine layer of your car's paint and can remove minor scratches and scrapes.

  • Work the rubbing compound into the area until you can no longer see the scratches. Then wipe it off with a clean cotton rag and continue wiping until all traces are gone.

  • Wash the affected area with soap and water to remove any traces of rubbing compound. Dry it thoroughly when you're done. At this point, no evidence of paint scrapes should remain.

  • Apply a protective coat of automotive wax using a clean cotton rag. Work the wax on in small circular motions to restore the glossy finish to your car's paint job.
