How to Replace a Brake Booster on a C4 Corvette

When replacing the brake booster on a C4 Corvette, make sure to mention engine size when ordering the booster. They are available in several diameters and the big block Corvettes require the smaller diameter brake boosters to clear the valve covers. When the master cylinder is removed, keep it tipped so the brake fluid loss is kept to a minimum. Always place a fender cover over the work side to protect the paint.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • Set of 3/8-inch drive sockets
  • 3/8-inch extension
  • Set of line wrenches
  • Clean rags
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Remove the two nuts securing the master cylinder to the brake booster, using the appropriate socket. Remove the two brake lines on the master cylinder, using the appropriate line wrenches.

  • Pull the master cylinder off the brake booster studs and hold the master cylinder with the two vacated holes pointing upward. This will prevent major loss of brake fluid.

  • Remove the snap clip on the brake booster rod to brake pedal arm. The clip is located on the steel pin that runs through the rod and upper part of the brake pedal arm. Use the needle-nose pliers to remove the clip.

  • Remove the four nuts located on the power booster studs where they protrude through the firewall, using the appropriate size socket and extension. Pull the vacuum hose one-way valve from the power brake booster. Pull the brake booster studs out of the firewall and remove the booster from under the hood.

  • Install the new booster and master cylinder in reverse order of removal.
