How to Install a Custom Stick Shift

Getting the most from your performance car eventually comes down to small modifications like putting in a custom short throw shifter or other custom stick shift. Accessing the assembly is the difficult part of the job on some cars. The swap itself is a simple job that transforms the soft stock shifter into a precision system that ensures faster gear changes.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Wrenches
  • Remove the shift knob from the stick and pull up the leather or vinyl boot. Remove any molding that makes access to the lower parts difficult.

  • Determine the location of the linkage bolts under the shift stick. Some cars require removal of the linkage from beneath the car. Remove the bolts holding the linkage in place and slide the assembly out. Unhook any cables or carriage bolts exposed as the linkage pulls out.

  • Pull the linkage assembly from the housing along with any rubber boots that remain. Set the housing aside and lay out the new linkage.

  • Grease the new bushings if recommended by the manufacturer and set them in place within the housing. Test fit the new linkage and verify it works smoothly in the housing. Expect slight side-to-side movement before final installation.

  • Secure the linkage in the housing using the original mounting points. Adjust bolt tightness as required for smooth operation of the assembly.

  • Insert the linkage housing in place and connect the shift assembly to the transmission. Run through the gears with to verify each one engages correctly.

  • Replace any molding and pull the boot over the stick. Screw the shift knob onto the stick and align it as desired.
