How to Change the Oil Filter in a Ford F-250 Diesel

The Ford F-250 diesel truck uses a thicker oil than most gas-powered vehicles, 15W-40 or better. The oil in the truck usually lasts 5,000 miles, or four to six months depending on how much you drive. Every two oil changes, you should change your oil filter. But Haynes, the well-known auto repair manual publisher, says that the minuscule cost of an oil filter in time and money is nothing compared with the huge benefits it gives to your truck and its engine. So every time you change your oil, go ahead and change the filter too.

Things You'll Need

  • Drain pan
  • Socket wrench
  • Oil filter wrench
  • 15 quarts of 15W-40 oil
  • Plastic bag
  • Plastic jugs
  • Place a drain pan beneath the drain plug of the oil pan reservoir. The reservoir is under the F-250 truck, behind the front tires. Remove the drain plug, using a socket wrench, and let the oil drain.

  • Locate the oil filter in the engine compartment. The filter is in the top middle of the engine, on the passenger's side.

  • Remove the oil filter with a filter wrench. Clean off where the filter was in contact with the engine block.

  • Screw the new filter onto the peg where the old filter was. Plug the reservoir with the drain plug bolt. Add oil to the engine.

  • Place the used oil filter in a plastic bag, and carefully pour the used oil into plastic jugs. Dispose of the used oil appropriately.
