How to Remove a Dodge 2.7 Engine Alternator

The Dodge 2.7 liter engine uses a 12-volt alternator to power the ignition system and accessories. This alternator is prone to wear and will eventually have to replaced. Removal is relatively simple when compared to previous engines and should take the average backyard mechanic about 20 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Screwdriver
  • Disconnect the battery. Turn the positive terminal bolt counterclockwise, then pull the terminal free. Set it aside. On the rear of the alternator, remove the terminal nut and take the loop terminal from the bolt.

  • Remove the serpentine drive belt. Press firmly on the tension pulley arm to loosen the belt, then slide it out from underneath the idle pulley wheel. Release the tension pulley arm and the belt will slacken even more, allowing it to be removed from the alternator pulley.

  • Turn the alternator mount nuts in a counterclockwise direction while holding the bolt heads stationary with a socket wrench. Once the bolts are free, slide them out of the mounts. The alternator will loosen to the point where it is completely free of the mount arms and can be manipulated from the engine compartment.
