Ford Differential Axle Removal

Removing the front differential is an uncommon and fairly complex operation. The front differential is a solid housing that moves as a whole unit instead of moving independently like an independent front suspension. Front differentials use coil or leaf pack springs to provide cushion for driving.

Tools for the Job

  • The tools needed for the removal of a Ford front differential are primarily basic hand tools. It is important to have a full set of sockets available for the removal. Lubricant is also important for the removal. Bolts and nuts become rusty and frozen over time, so a good penetrating lubricant is a must for stubborn bolts. The tie rod ends will also need to be disconnected and, over time, these joints seize up. To remove these pieces, a pry bar is important. A floor jack and jack stands are also a necessity for an axle removal.

Axle Removal

  • To begin the removal, find a sturdy place on the frame of the vehicle toward the front. Use the jack stands and floor jack to lift the front end off the ground. Once the vehicle is off the ground, the removal can begin. Lubricate the nuts with penetrating oil to help unfreeze any rust. Use the socket set to remove the nuts that hold on the drag link, tie rods and track bar. These are the connections on the front side of the axle. The control arms must be disconnected from the backside of the axle and can be removed from either the frame or the axle. The axle may have to be pulled out of place but, with all the connections released, the axle should be ready to be removed.

Tips and Cautions

  • Ask a friend or two to help you with the procedure. There is no easy way to do this job by yourself. The front axle weights in at about 300 lbs., depending on the model of the axle and the vehicle that it is beneath. The extra set of hands and eyes may also help in problem solving, should you have any issues with the removal. Another good idea prior to beginning the removal is to purchase a Haynes manual from your local auto parts store. Haynes manuals provide step-by-step instructions and maintenance procedures for specific vehicles. Take your time and analyze what you are about to do before you take a wrench to it. Look for the joints that connect the axle to the vehicle and remove only the necessary parts. The should be removed as a complete unit which will save you time.
