How to Fix a Frozen Windshield Wiper Reservoir

The windshield wiper reservoir on your vehicle uses windshield wiper fluid, which is normally resistant to freezing. However, in extremely cold temperatures, it can turn to slush or freeze completely. Once this happens, the lines in your system will freeze. Normally, this is not a problem, since they are made of rubber tubing. However, it will prevent you from using the windshield washer until you can fix this issue.

Things You'll Need

  • Windshield anti-freeze fluid
  • Start your vehicle's engine and allow it to warm up to normal operating temperature. The needle on the water gauge should be in the middle of the gauge. Alternatively, you may want to park your vehicle overnight in a garage that is heated or at least above freezing temperatures.

  • Drain the windshield wiper fluid once it has thawed. You can do this by parking it outside once the washer fluid has thawed and run the fluid through the system.

  • Open the hood and unscrew the cap on the top of the windshield washer fluid reservoir tank.

  • Pour in the anti-freeze fluid. Anti-freeze fluid is specially formulated to resist freezing better than standard washer fluid.
