How to Change the Air Filter on a Toyota Camry

Changing the air filter on your Toyota Camry is considered part of routine maintenance that should be done at least once every 20,000 miles or when the air filter is dirty to the point of clogging. A clogged or dirty air filter in your Toyota Camry inhibits engine performance and causes the engine to run poorly and inefficiently, and you lose gas mileage due to the air restriction caused by the air filter. Replacing the engine air filter is easy and quick, and it saves you money by increasing gas mileage.

Things You'll Need

  • New air filter
  • Open the hood on your Camry and prop it.

  • Locate the air filter box in the engine compartment. It is black and square-shaped, and is located either directly to the left or right of the engine.

  • Unlatch the latches that hold the cover to the air box. The four latches around the perimeter of the air box must be removed by hand.

  • Remove the old air filter from the air box.

  • Install the new air filter into the air-box housing, and latch down the air-box cover.
