How to Change the Power Locks on a Jeep Grand Cherokee

The power door locks on your Jeep Grand Cherokee use an electric switch to operate a solenoid that in turn actuates the lock through a metal rod. You can replace the window switch, lock actuator motor or both. However, rivets attach the motor to the inner door panel. If you are replacing the motor, then you will need a set of 1/4- by 1/2-inch bolts and locknuts to mount the new motor.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Door trim panel clip tool
  • Standard screwdriver
  • Electric drill and 1/4-inch drill bit, if necessary
  • 1/4- by 1/2-inch bolts and locknuts, if necessary
  • Masking tape, if necessary

Removing the Window Switch and Actuator Motor

  • Detach the ground (black) battery cable, using a wrench. If necessary, wrap electrical tape around the metal terminal to keep it from contacting the battery post as you work on the power lock system.

  • Unscrew any fasteners holding the door trim panel to the inner door panel, including handle and lever, using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Detach the door trim panel from the inner door panel using a door trim panel clip tool. Then remove the panel from the door.

  • Take the plastic watershield off the inner door panel, being careful not to tear the plastic. If you are replacing the lock actuator motor only, then skip to Step 7.

  • Unplug the window switch electrical connector.

  • Remove the window-switch retaining clips, using a standard screwdriver, and take the switch off the inner door panel.

  • Detach the motor actuator from the inner door panel by drilling out the mounting rivets, using a 1/4-inch drill bit. If necessary, after drilling the rivets, break the rivets union, using a drift punch and hammer.

  • Unhook the motor actuator rod from the bellcrank at the top of the motor actuator, by hand.

  • Unplug the electrical connectors from the motor and take the motor out of the inner door panel.

Installing the Window Switch and Actuator Motor

  • Place the new motor inside the inner door panel and plug in the electrical connectors. If you are replacing the window switch only, then skip to Step 4.

  • Hook the motor actuator rod to the bellcrank at the top of the motor actuator, by hand.

  • Attach the motor actuator to the inner door panel, using 1/4- by 1/2-inch bolts and locknuts in place of the rivets.

  • Install the new window switch in the inner door panel, using the clips.

  • Plug the electrical connector to the window switch.

  • Replace the watershield over the inner door panel, using new masking tape if necessary.

  • Position the door trim panel on the inner door panel and press the trim clips against the clip retainers.

  • Screw in the door trim panel fasteners and install the handle and lever, using the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Attach the ground (black) battery cable, using the wrench.
