How to Replace the Power Window Switch on a Subaru Outback

Subaru Outbacks are manufactured with electric power windows, actuated with a switch module on each door panel. The module can be taken out and replaced quite easily and should take the average backyard mechanic no more than 20 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Socket set
  • Disconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt in a counterclockwise direction. Set the open terminal aside, where it does not touch metal.

  • Pry the cover from the window switches with a screwdriver and set it aside. The cover does not have any screws. Simply place the edge of the screwdriver into the crevice between the cover and the arm rest and lever the cover out of position.

  • Remove the switch assembly by turning the small screw on the side of the assembly in a counterclockwise direction. The switch module can be pried up with the screwdriver and pulled directly out of the door panel opening. Do not pull too far, because there are wires holding the assembly in.

  • Disconnect the switch module from the wiring harness by pulling the adapter plug from the rear of the assembly. The switch is now free and can be removed completely.

  • Plug the new switch module into the wiring harness by pressing the adapter plug into the rear of the assembly.

  • Position the assembly into the door panel and secure the screw by turning it clockwise. Replace the switch cover by pressing it into the opening until the side tabs engage, holding it in.

  • Reconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal clockwise.
