How to Erase ABS Light Trouble Codes on a VW

The ABS trouble codes on a VW can be erased by cutting power to the ECU. The easiest way to do this is by disconnecting the battery. While the codes will be erased, if there is a legitimate problem, they will come back. Ultimately, you will need to get the problem fixed. However, erasing the codes takes just a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • 10 mm socket
  • Loosen the retaining nut on the cable that runs to the VW's negative battery terminal.

  • Slide the cable clamp off the negative battery terminal.

  • Wait one to two minutes. This will reset the ECU and begin the process of erasing the trouble codes.

  • Reconnect the negative cable and drive the VW for a few days, traveling roughly 100 miles. The ECU and the trouble codes for the ABS light should be cleared and reset.
