How to Disable the Check Engine Light in a Montero

The check engine light of a Mitsubishi Montero can turn on for a number of reasons. It sometimes serves to warn of serious engine problems or malfunctions in the car's emissions control system; however, often the check engine light is simply there to alert the driver that the car needs basic maintenance. For drivers who perform these simple maintenance jobs themselves, it is important to learn how to turn off this light so that in the future, potentially serious problems don't go unnoticed.

Things You'll Need

  • Crescent wrench
  • Pull on the hood release in the interior of your Montero and open the hood.

  • Use a crescent wrench to loosen the clamp on the black (negative) wire that is connected to the battery.

  • Pull off this wire and place it in a way so that the metal end is not in contact with anything else.

  • Wait 5 minutes.

  • Reconnect the black (negative) wire to the battery and tighten it with the crescent wrench.

  • Close the hood and turn on the Montero.
