How to Tighten Windshield Wipers on a GMC Sonoma

Wobbling windshield wipers are not only annoying, but can be dangerous as well. Over time, the bolt attaching your wiper arm to your wiper motor can become loose. When this happens, it will be necessary to tighten the wiper rod bolt. It's a quick fix for a simple problem that could become dangerous if not taken care of.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Socket wrench set
  • Turn your wipers and engine off. Look closely at the area between the hood and the windshield. This is called the cowl panel; it must be removed to access your wiper motor.

  • Remove the screws along the top of the cowl panel and set them aside. Lift the cowl panel from the vehicle and set it down.

  • Open the hood and look closely at the rear of the engine bay (driver's side) to find the wiper motor. Find the rod connecting to the wiper motor that comes from the windshield wipers. These rods connect your wiper motor and wiper blades.

  • Use a socket wrench to tighten the retaining bolt on the wiper rod, where it connects to the motor. The size will depend on the year model of your Sonoma, so its best to have a socket set handy.

  • Close the hood and replace the cowl panel. Install the screws and use your windshield wipers. They should be straight, tight and not wobbling.
