How to Replace a Lexus ES300 Fuel Pump

A faulty fuel pump can cause erratic starting, low engine output or even leave you stranded by the side of the road. With a few simple tools, you can have your Lexus ES300's fuel pump replaced in no time.

Things You'll Need

  • Regular screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Set of metric sockets
  • Torque wrench
  • Replacement fuel pump
  • Fuel pump gasket

Removal

  • Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal.

  • Take out the rear seat.

  • Remove the fuel pump cover and fuel filler cap.

  • Disconnect both the outlet pipe and the return hose from the pump bracket. Disconnect the electrical wire.

  • Loosen all eight screws, then remove the fuel pump/bracket assembly. Be sure to remove the old gasket.

Installation

  • Use a new gasket when reinstalling the fuel pump. Slide the pump into position and tighten the screws to 35 inch-pounds.

  • Reconnect the fuel line and the return hose to the pump housing. Tighten the bolts to 22 foot-pounds.

  • Reconnect the electrical wire. Reinstall the fuel pump cover and the rear seat cushion.

  • Reconnect the ground cable to the negative battery terminal.
