How to Change a Belt on KIA Sorento

The Kia Sorento is a dependable compact car that gets good gas mileage and has an array of safety features often found on much more expensive cars. While the Sorento is a relatively maintenance-free vehicle, sometimes certain replaceable parts will wear out. One such part is the serpentine belt on the Sorrento's engine. The serpentine belt is driven by the crankshaft of the motor and is linked to other pulleys that provide power for things such as the electrical system and power steering system of the car. Replacing the belt in a Kia Sorento is not difficult and can be done in as little as 15 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Pop the hood of the car and locate the serpentine belt on the front of the engine. Look on the left-hand side of the pulley system and locate the belt tensioner pulley. This pulley simply rides on the belt to provide tension and keeps it from slipping off.

  • Use the screwdriver to loosen the set screw on the right-hand side of the pulley mount. Attach the socket wrench to the bolt in the middle of the pulley.

  • Turn the pulley clockwise, which will pull the pulley up and release tension on the serpentine belt. Slide the belt off of the pulleys and slide the new belt in its place. Let the tensioner pulley down onto the serpentine belt, and start the car to make sure the belt is configured correctly.
