How to Use a Pop Rivet Fastener

Pop rivet fasteners are a fantastic invention. They allow the mechanical fastening of two of more materials without glue or welding. Unlike solid rivets, pop rivets allow a repair to be done from just one side of the work.

Things You'll Need

  • Pop rivets
  • Pop rivet tool
  • Electric drill
  • Drill bit
  • Prepare your pieces to be riveted. Do this by drilling a hole through all the pieces where the rivet will be installed. The hole should be the same size as the rivet. For example, make a 1/8 inch hole for a 1/8 inch rivet.

  • Select the proper nose piece for the rivet tool for the rivets being used. The shank of the rivet should fit closely in the nose piece. Unscrew the nose piece from the tool and screw the new one in to replace it.

  • Insert the shank of the rivet into the nose piece until the rivet flange is seated against the nose piece.

  • Place the body of the rivet through the hole you drilled through the pieces to be riveted.

  • Squeeze the handles of the rivet tool until the shank of the rivet breaks off the rivet. Repeat for all the rivets in your assembly.
