Replacing a Fuel Filter on a Chevrolet Caprice

Relieve Fuel Pressure

  • On a fuel injected vehicle, such as a Chevy Caprice, it is a good idea to relieve the fuel pressure before removing the fuel filter. The easiest way on the Chevy Caprice is to relieve the pressure at the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. The Schrader valve looks similar to a tire valve and it is on the fuel rail on top of the injectors. Place a rag in front of it and push the Schrader in with a small screwdriver. There will be more pressure than fuel expelled.

Finding and Removing the Filter

  • Jack the car up and support it on jack stands for safety. The fuel filter will be found on the driver's side mid-way back under the car attached to the frame rail. It will have a round bracket that squeezes the filter to hold it. The bracket will be mounted with a bolt to the frame rail. It is usually not necessary to remove the bracket. Just loosen the pinch bolt and the filter will slide out. Using needle nose pliers, squeeze the while plastic retainers where the metal fuel line enters the filter. As these retainers are compressed, pull the filter and the fuel line apart. Use the same procedure for the other side.

Installing the New Filter

  • Before installing the new filter, make sure that the arrow on the side is facing the engine when installed. This is the direction of flow. Look at the plastic retainers now that the fuel filter is removed. They have two raised ends. These raised ends must be straight up and down when installing the fuel filter so they can be compressed if need be. Install the fuel filter, making sure the arrow is pointing to the engine. Push the metal fuel line straight into the filter and hold with the other hand. Push it in until there is a definite click. Once the fuel line is seated into the filter, gently try to pull them apart. If they are tight, proceed to the other side and use the same procedure. Tighten up the pinch bolt and leave the car down. Cycle the key a few times to pressurize the system and check for leaks.
