How to Replace the Front Motor Mount on a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser

There are three motor mounts and one torque strut on a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser. The main engine mount is on the passenger side strut tower. There is another one on the lower back side that attaches to the engine cradle and to the lower block, one on the top of the transmission and a torque strut on the passenger side under the car. The torque strut, or dog bone, is used for for torque control, not support. The strut that is being replaced is the primary mount located on the passenger side. It is mounted with a vertical bolt at the strut tower and a horizontal bolt at the engine. Always check all the mounts for torn rubber or metal-to-metal contact creating vibration through the car.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of 3/8-inch drive sockets
  • Ratchet
  • Floor jack
  • Place the floor jack under the engine oil pan and position it close to the crankshaft pulley side of the pan. Raise the jack just enough to start lifting the engine.

  • Remove the new motor mount from the box and lay it close to the mount being replaced. The important thing in this procedure is to position the mount to go in exactly the same way. The mount is made in such a way that it can be installed either way. If installed upside down, it will work, but will also cause vibrations. Look at the new mount and note that the rubber in the center protrudes out one side much farther than the other. Look at the mount on the engine and see what side the protrusion is on. Make sure the new one goes in the same way.

  • Remove the nut from the horizontal bolt that is installed through the rubber. Raise the engine in very small increments until the bolt has no tension on it then remove the bolt. Remove the vertical bolt on the strut tower.

  • Install the new mount, making sure it is oriented the proper way as described in Step 2. Put the bolt and nut in the rubber portion of the mount. Put the vertical bolt in the mount. It is important to line the mount up in the center of the groove, as this is engine alignment. Torque the two bolts to 80 foot pounds. Lower the floor jack.
