How to Replace the Throttle Body in a Pontiac Grand Am

The Pontiac Grand Am came on the scene in the 1970s, but it wasn't until the 1980s when it became the Pontiac of choice for new-car buyers. It was affordable, attractive and offered a nice array of options. The last generation of Grand Am was produced from 1999 through 2005 with either an economical 2.4L four-cylinder or the more powerful 3.4L V6. Here are the do-it-yourself steps to replace the throttle body.

Things You'll Need

  • Mechanic's toolset, including a full socket set, wrenches and screwdrivers
  • Torque wrench
  • Clean shop cloths
  • Replacement gasket
  • Take out the air cleaner resonator. Disconnect the harness connectors for both the idle air control and the throttle position sensor. Label and then remove all the vacuum hoses from the throttle body.

  • Remove the bracket and the cables for the accelerator control from the throttle body. Loosen and remove the throttle body fasteners.

  • Lift the throttle body off the manifold. Remove the throttle body gasket and inspect it carefully. Replace the gasket as needed or re-install the old gasket to the throttle body after cleaning all the mating surfaces thoroughly.

  • Set the throttle body on the manifold and finger-tighten the fasteners. Torque the bolts to 89 inch pounds.

  • Install the cables and bracket for the accelerator cable, then reconnect the vacuum hoses. Reconnect the harness connectors for the throttle position sensor and the and idle air control valve, then replace the air cleaner resonator.

  • Depress the accelerator pedal to test its movement and to assure that there is no binding. Press the pedal to the floor one time then release it. Make the necessary adjustments.
