The anti-lock braking system (ABS) on the Dodge Ram uses a wheel sensor to monitor the wheel speed on each wheel. The ABS controller uses this information to prevent the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. If the ABS warning light comes on, it may indicate the wheel sensor has become clogged with metallic debris such as brake dust.
Determine which ABS wheel sensor your Dodge Ram will need. You'll want to be sure the new wheel sensor is compatible with your make and model of Ram. ABS has been standard equipment on the rear wheels or all wheels for four-wheel drive Ram trucks since 1989.
Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the mounting bolt for the wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle with a socket wrench.
Unplug the electrical connector for the wheel speed sensor and note the routing for the sensor's electrical cable. Release the retaining clips on the cable and detach the wheel speed sensor.
Install the new wheel speed sensor and route the sensor's electrical cable as previously noted before attaching the retaining clips. Plug in the electrical connector for the wheel speed sensor. Use the original sensor mounting bolt or an exact replacement because this bolt cannot be substituted. Fasten the mounting bolt for the sensor to the steering knuckle and use a torque wrench to tighten it to 17 ft. lbs.
Lower the vehicle and test the ABS for proper operation.
