How to Replace a Fuel Filter in a Subaru Outback

The fuel filter in your Subaru Outback ensures that the fuel in the fuel injection system stays clean, which prevents plugged fuel injectors or a plugged fuel pressure regulator. Some mechanics recommend changing your fuel filter every 30,000 to 40,000 miles. Follow the directions below to replace the fuel filter in a Subaru Outback made between 1998 and 2004.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrenches
  • Screwdriver
  • New fuel filter
  • Relieve the fuel system pressure by first disconnecting the fuel pump connector from the fuel pump relay. Start the engine and let it run until it stalls. Try to start it again and let it run until it stalls.

  • Crank the engine for about five seconds to remove any remaining pressure from the system. Turn the ignition off.

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable. Locate the fuel filter in the engine compartment and remove the hose clamps. Slide the hoses off the filter. Then, remove the filter from the bracket.

  • Check the hoses for cracks and replace them if necessary. Place the new filter in the bracket. Tighten the screws on the hose clamps.

  • Reconnect the fuel pump harness and then negative battery cable. Start the engine of your Subaru Outback and check for leaks. Immediately repair any leaks you find.
