How to Remove the EGR Valve on Ford 6.0 Diesel

An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve is part of a vehicle's emissions control system, which regulates the amount of engine exhaust that can circulate. Because of the EGR valve's role under the hood, it can become quite dirty. To clean it, you must first remove it. With a hulking machine like the Ford F-250 6.0 Super Stroke Diesel, EGR valve removal may sound intimidating. With a little practice, anyone can remove the EGR valve.

Things You'll Need

  • Tack-removal screwdriver
  • Adjustable pliers
  • Shut off your vehicle.

  • Find the valve: Look for a small black cylinder between the oil filter housing the intake on top of the motor.

  • Disconnect the four-wire weather pack connector by pulling the tab on the backside of the plug.

  • Remove the EGR valve. Use a tack-removal screwdriver to lift it until you can get a pair of adjustable pliers on it. Twist the pliers counterclockwise.

  • Clean carbon buildup from the EGR valve by scraping it with a pick or small screwdriver.
