How to Replace the Ignition Coil in a Toyota Tacoma

The ignition coil, which converts low-voltage power from the battery into high-voltage power to trigger the spark plugs, works as the heart of the ignition system. If you have a damaged Tacoma ignition coil, you may not be able to start your vehicle. Other symptoms include oil leaks, irregular or fast idle or stalling when you stop or slow down.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet and socket set
  • Tacoma ignition coil
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable, also called the ground cable, from the negative battery terminal post for safety. For extra precaution, set your emergency or parking brake.

  • Locate the ignition coil, which should be near the intake manifold. You may need to remove the cylinder head cover in order to expose the ignition coil.

  • Use a ratchet and socket set to remove the connectors that secure the Tacoma ignition coil in place.

  • Free the ignition coil by pulling up. You may need to twist slightly or grip the ignition coil boot and pull to release the seal formed between the ignition coil and the cylinder head.

  • Insert your new Tacoma ignition coil. Make sure you get a good connection, or your vehicle may not start.

  • Secure the ignition coil in place.

  • Reassemble any components that you removed to access the ignition coil.
