How to Replace the Ignition Coil Pack in a Plymouth Neon

High tension leads connect the Neon ignition coils to the cylinders. This allows the ignition coils to spark two spark plugs per powerstroke. Plymouth uses a distributorless ignition system, also called a direct ignition system, on the Neon, which means you'll find the ignition coil inside an ignition pack, or ignition module.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench or socket set
  • Neon ignition coil pack
  • Disconnect the ground cable from the battery. To do this, unhook the negative cable--most batteries have a negative symbol over the terminal to help you identify it. The direct ignition system powers 40,000 volts, which could cause serious injury if you fail to disconnect the battery.

  • Unfasten the spark plug wires from the Neon ignition coil. Pull on the boot, not the wire, to prevent damage. Also detach the electrical connectors from the ignition coil.

  • Use a wrench or a socket set to undo the coil pack mounting bolts.

  • Separate the ignition pack from the engine.

  • Connect the spark plug wires to the new Neon ignition coil pack and install the new ignition coil. Make sure you match the numbers on the cylinder heads to the correct ignition coil wires.

  • Check your connections to ensure the wires fully contact the ignition coil.

  • Reverse the process to reassemble all the parts.
