The Lincoln Navigator has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) that prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. The ABS controller accomplishes this by reducing the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. You may need to replace the ABS controller if the ABS warning light comes on. However, it is not necessarily unsafe to drive your vehicle without an ABS.
Determine which ABS controller your Lincoln Navigator will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Navigator. All versions of the Navigator have an ABS that you can separate from the hydraulic control unit.
Disconnect both battery cables with a socket wrench. Unplug the electrical connector for the ABS controller. Clean any dirt or debris from the ABS controller.
Remove the three mounting bolts for the ABS controller with a wrench. Carefully detach the ABS controller from the hydraulic control unit. Clean the exposed surface of the hydraulic control unit with denatured alcohol.
Install the new ABS controller. Be careful not to expose this module to static electrical charges because this can damage the unit. Use a torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts for the ABS controller to 18 foot pounds. Attach the electrical connector for the ABS controller and connect both battery cables with a socket wrench.
Calibrate and configure the new ABS controller. You may do this either by downloading the default information or uploading your as-built data method and downloading the modified parameters.
