How to Replace a Fuel Pump in a Kia Spectra

The Kia Spectra has an electric fuel pump so you should check its fuses and relays and ensure you have fuel before performing the more difficult task of inspecting the fuel pump. If your vehicle still has difficulty getting fuel you may need to clean or replace the fuel pump. The Kia Spectra comes in a variety of styles and trim levels that can affect the replacement fuel pump you choose.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel pump kit
  • Socket wrench set
  • Determine which fuel pump your Kia Spectra will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. All versions of the Kia Spectra have a 2.0 L engine.

  • Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

  • Access the fuel pump by taking out the rear seat cushion so you can remove the fuel pump cover. Disconnect the fuel gauge connector, fuel gauge and hoses. Unplug the electrical connection from the fuel pump and remove the fuel pump from its bracket. Discard the seal ring.

  • Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit and be sure to replace the seal ring so that it remains in the groove. Hold the fuel pump assembly and pull the fuel pump down so it is tight against the bracket. Use care to avoid damaging the filter.

  • Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
