How to Replace a Fuel Pump in a Mitsubishi 3000GT

The Mitsubishi 3000GT has an electric fuel pump so you should ensure that its fuses and relays are working before inspecting it. You may need to clean or replace your fuel pump if your fuel tank is not empty but your engine is still having trouble getting fuel. The Mitsubishi 3000 GT comes in a variety of styles that can affect the replacement fuel pump you choose.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel pump kit
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Determine which fuel pump your Mitsubishi 3000GT will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size and type. The Mitsubishi 3000GT was equipped with a 3.0 L 6G72 engine in several different configurations including a twin-turbo version.

  • Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Remove the fuel gauge cover in the rear floor pan.

  • Unplug the electrical connections for the fuel gauge and fuel pump. Remove the overfill limiter and loosen the nuts with a socket wrench so you can remove both sides of the fuel hose. Note the orientation of the nipples on the fuel pump before removing it. Lift the fuel gauge and pump assembly out of the fuel tank.

  • Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit. There will be three projections on the packing that you will need to align with the holes on the fuel pump.

  • Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure. Tighten the body side nut on the fuel hose with a torque wrench to 22 ft. lbs. and the fuel pump side nut to 25 ft. lbs.
