How to Install a Stereo in an Acura Integra

Installing a stereo in your 2001 Integra is not a difficult procedure, but there are a couple of things to be mindful of. If you're putting the same stereo back in, you'll need the anti-theft code for it. The code, along with the unit's serial number, was on a card provided by the dealer. If you don't have the card, look in the owner's manual to see if the information was transferred to the pages there. Without the code, note the serial number of the audio unit when you have it out, then contact an authorized service center to obtain the code.

While disassembling and reassembling the console, don't disconnect any wire harnesses covered in yellow sheathing. The yellow-sheathed harnesses are for the airbag system. It's dangerous to disconnect the yellow harnesses without first disabling the airbag system.

Things You'll Need

  • Memory saver
  • Wrench set
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Tape
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Stubby Phillips screwdriver
  • Shop rag

Removal

  • Turn the ignition switch off and set the parking brake. Install the memory saver. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Wait at least three minutes before proceeding to allow the airbag system to lose residual power.

  • Wrap the tip of a small flat-head screwdriver with tape. Find the access panel -- a rectangular plate -- under the parking brake handle. Pry the panel off, using the screwdriver, and taking care not to scratch the console. Remove the two screws.

  • Move the front seats forward, then remove the two screws -- one on each side -- from the bottom rear corners of the console. Remove the rear half of the console cover by lifting it up and sliding it forward over the parking brake handle. Move the seats back.

  • Pull the ashtray out. Find three screws across the top of the ashtray opening. Remove the two outer screws and pull the cigarette lighter unit toward you to disengage the retainer clips. Disconnect the four-pin connector on the back and remove the cigarette lighter unit.

  • Remove two screws, one in each upper corner of the cigarette lighter unit opening, and two screws -- one on each side -- of the bottom-forward edge of the console panel. If you have an automatic transmission, move the shift lever to "D3" and, using the screwdriver with the wrapped tip, pry off the trim ring around the shift position plate. Wrap a shop rag around the shift lever and the shift position plate. If you have a stick, pull the shifter boot down and unscrew the shifter knob.

  • Lift the forward console cover and slip it over the shift lever. For the automatic shifter, lift the console cover and turn it perpendicular to the console to slip the opening in the cover over the T-shaped shift handle.

  • Using the stubby Phillips screwdriver, loosen the two mounting screws on the bottom of the audio unit and slide it toward you. Disconnect the connectors and the antenna cable from the back of the audio unit and remove it from the dashboard.

Installation

  • Connect the connectors and the antenna cable to the back of the new audio unit. Slide the unit into the dashboard, then tighten the mounting screws. Slide the front console cover over the shift lever and install the four screws. Remove the rag from the shift lever. Press the trim ring in place around the shift position plate and put the shifter in "Park"or screw on the shift knob and pull the shifter boot up.

  • Connect the connector on the back of the cigarette lighter unit and insert the unit into the dashboard until the retainer clips catch. Tighten the two screws and push in the ashtray.

  • Move the front seats forward. Slip the rear console cover over the parking brake handle and set it down over the console. Tighten the two rear screws, then move the seats back. Tighten the two screws, then press the access panel until it snaps into place.

  • Connect the negative battery cable and tighten the pinch-bolt. Turn the ignition to the accessory position and turn on the radio. Input the five-digit theft code, using the preset buttons on the radio.
