Corolla Torque Converter Removal

A torque converter in a Toyota Corolla is the component that can increase or decrease the engine rpm. The torque converter converts fluid pressure and locks the converter output shaft. The transmission receives engine power when the shaft is locked. The torque converter must be removed if there are problems with the converter or the transmission.

Removal

  • The torque converter in a Toyota Corolla is located on the car's underside. The torque converter is the round component located in the front at the edge of the transmission. The torque converter can be removed by rotating it counter-clockwise with your hands. It will unlatch, and you can lift it out with your hands.

Transmission Damage

  • Torque converters may be removed for a variety of reasons. If your transmission is damaged, you'll need to service it or replace it. If your transmission is leaking fluid or emitting a noise, or the "Check the Engine" light is on in your Corolla, you may have a transmission problem. You'll need to remove the transmission and the torque converter, or have a mechanic do it, in order to repair the problem.

Damaged Torque Converter

  • Torque converters may need to be removed because they're no longer functioning properly. If the Corolla's rpm is unable to increase or decrease, this could be an indication of damage to the torque converter. You may need to remove it to inspect it and determine whether it needs to be replaced.
