Coolant, or anti-freeze, is the substance in your 2001 Toyota Camry that absorbs the heat exuded from your engine, and dispels it through the radiator. Its jobs include preventing freezing and corrosion. Coolant is ethylene and water and should be flushed out completely and replaced at least once a year.
Toyota recommends the 2001 Toyota Camry Sedan receive "Toyota Long Life Coolant." If you choose a different type of coolant, make sure it is not alcohol-based and it is mixed in a 1:1 ratio with distilled water.
To check your coolant levels at home, make sure your Toyota has been off long enough for the engine to cool. View the level of coolant by looking at the radiator reservoir. Coolant should be between the "low" and "full" lines. If coolant is below the "low" line, add coolant until it is properly filled.
To flush your Toyota's coolant system, let the engine to cool, remove the radiator cap, unfasten both the radiator drain and engine drain plugs, allow the coolant to drain, and replace plugs. Refill the coolant system to the "full" line, replace the radiator cap, and start the engine.
