How do I Remove The Fan From an S10 4.3 Vortec Water Pump?

The fan mounted to the water pump on an S-10 pickup that's equipped with the 4.3-liter engine is part of the fan clutch. These two components are mounted to the water pump via a special mount and can be difficult to remove without the proper tools. Once you have those tools--which you can get at most local auto parts stores--you can remove the fan and fan clutch in approximately 15 minutes or so. Then the fan itself comes off the clutch in less than five minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Fan clutch removal tool set
  • Pop the hood. Unbolt the upper fan shroud from the core support on the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Place the fan holding tool from the fan clutch removal tool set onto two of the bolts that hold the fan to the fan clutch so that the tool holds the fan steady.

  • Place the wrench from the fan clutch removal tool set onto the hex-head nut connecting the fan clutch to the water pump. Turn the wrench against the fan holding tool so that the wrench is turning counterclockwise and loosens from the water pump. Then remove the assembly from the engine compartment.

  • Unbolt the fan from the fan clutch using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the fan off the clutch.
