The water pump is a vital part of the Toyota Tundra's engine. In fact, it is the heart of the cooling system, circulating the coolant. A faulty water pump can cause some serious damage to the engine of your Toyota Tundra. Make sure to change out a bad water pump in order to prolong the life of your engine.
Place a drain pan underneath the radiator and drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the timing belt, the #2 idler pulley and disconnect the bypass hose and the radiator hose from the water pump.
Remove the water inlet housing assembly.
Loosen and remove the water pump bolts and take the water pump out of the engine, discarding the gasket and o-ring.
Install the new water pump with a new gasket, tightening the mounting bolts to 15 foot pounds (21 Nm) and the stud nut and bolt to 13 foot pounds (18 Nm).
Attach the water inlet housing assembly with a new o-ring, tightening the bolts to 13 foot pounds (18 Nm).
Reattach and reinstall all remaining components in the order that they were removed.
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Refill the engine's cooling system with coolant. Start the car and check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
Disconnect the negative battery cable and loosen and remove the five bolts to the #1 engine undercover sub assembly.
Place a drain pan underneath the radiator and drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.
Take out the V bank cover, the drive belt, and the fan assembly and shroud.
Detach the ventilation hose #2 and take out the air cleaner assembly. Also detach the water inlet, the two oil cooler hose with the oil cover and the radiator and bypass hoses.
Loosen and remove the five water pump bolts and remove the water pump, discarding the O-ring and gasket.
Take out the two bolts to the idler pulley sub assembly and remove it from the engine along with the alternator.
Take out the mounting bolt to the suction hose sub assembly to the air conditioning compressor. Detach the air condition compressor connector and take out the four bolts to separate the belt tensioner assembly and the compressor. Take out the belt tensioner assembly.
Loosen and remove the water pump bolts and remove the water pump from the engine.
Clean all the mounting surfaces and install the new water pump with new gasket, tightening the first set of bolts to 80 inch lbs and the second to 17 foot pounds.
Reinstall the belt tensioner assembly and all remaining components in the order in which they were removed.
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Refill the engine's cooling system with coolant. Start the car and check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the engine undercover.
Place a drain pan underneath the radiator and drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.
Take out the upper radiator hose.
Stretch the power steering belt and loosen the mounting nuts to the fan pulley. Loosen the following bolts: lock, pivot and adjusting. Then remove the drive belt.
Loosen and remove the idler pulley nut and its adjusting bolt to remove the air conditioning belt.
Remove the bolts listed above and take out the alternator drive belt, the #2 fan shroud with its clips and the fan with the pulleys and coupling.
Move the power steering pump to the side without disconnecting the lines. Also move the compressor from the engine and move it without disconnecting the lines. Remove the air conditioning bracket if applicable.
Remove the six bolts to the timing belt cover and remove the #2 timing belt cover.
Take out the #1 cylinder to the TDC (Top dead Center) of the compression stroke and the camshaft timing pulleys.
Remove the thermostat and disconnect the #2 cooler hose from the pump.
Loosen and remove the seven water pump bolts and remove the pump, discarding the o-ring and gasket.
Clean all mounting surfaces and install the new water pump with a new o-ring and gasket, tightening the bolts to 14 foot pounds. (20 Nm). Make sure to use sealant when installing.
Reinstall or reconnect all components in the order in which they were removed.
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Refill the engine's cooling system with coolant. Start the car and check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
