How to Replace the Water Pump in a Mitsubishi 3000GT

The water pump is like the heart of the cooling system in your Mitsubishi 3000GT. If the water pump is faulty, it could cause a lot of problems in your vehicle's engine. Make sure to change a leaky water pump to keep the engine running smoothly.

Things You'll Need

  • Drain pan
  • Wrench set
  • Coolant

Remove the Old Pump

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  • Place a drain pan underneath the radiator. When the engine is cool, drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.

  • Take off the undercover to the engine.

  • Take the clamp bolt off of the power steering hose.

  • Support the engine from underneath and take off the mount bracket to the engine.

  • Remove the timing belt and the alternator brace and disconnect the coolant hoses from the water pump.

  • Loosen and remove the bolts to the water pump, taking note to their locations for reinstall as they are of varying lengths. Remove the gasket and o-ring and discard.

Install the New Pump

  • Clean all mounting surfaces to the water pump on the engine block and moisten a new o-ring with water and install it onto the front of the inlet pipe.

  • Install the new water pump with a new gasket, tightening the bolts to 17 foot pounds (24 Nm).

  • Reconnect all hoses to the pump and reinstall the timing belt and the engine drive belts.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  • Refill the engine's cooling system with coolant. Start the car and check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
