Where Is the Cam Sensor on an '01 F350 Diesel?

Ford's 2001 F-350 Super Duty trucks came in XL, XLT and Lariat trim levels. The 7.3-liter Powerstroke turbodiesel was available as an option. The cylinder block in your Powerstroke diesel was designed to withstand the rigors of diesel operation, using four-bolt main bearing caps, forged steel crankshaft and heavy-duty forged steel connecting rods.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Extension
  • Engine oil
  • Foot-pound torque wrench
  • Park the truck, turn the ignition switch off and remove the key. Open the hood and let the engine cool. Loosen the negative ground cable terminal clamp on the driver-side battery, using a wrench, and remove the terminal clamp from the battery. Do the same on the passenger-side battery. Route the cables away from the battery posts.

  • Locate the camshaft position sensor on the front of the engine block, above and to the passenger-side of the harmonic balancer. Lift up on the electrical connector locking tab and disconnect the wires from the sensor. Wipe the area immediately surrounding the sensor with a clean shop rag to remove debris that may fall into the sensor hole. Remove the sensor retaining bolt, using a ratchet, extension and socket, and remove the sensor from the block.

  • Apply a light coat of fresh engine oil on the seal of the new sensor. Install the sensor and retainer bolt in the block, and tighten the bolt to 18 foot-pounds, using a foot-pound torque wrench, socket and extension.

  • Reconnect the electrical wires to the sensor. Ensure that the retainer tab snaps securely into place. Install the battery negative cables on both batteries and tighten them. Close the hood and start the engine.
