How to Change the Belt Tensioner on a 1999 Audi A4

My dad has a 1999 Audi A4 with the 1.8-liter turbo. He complained to me that he heard a whining noise when he started the car and when it was idling, so I looked at it for him. The bearings in the serpentine belt tensioner were making the noise, so I offered to change it for him.

A Little Ingenuity

  • I used a 17 mm wrench on the tensioner to turn it clockwise and slip the belt off it, and then a 13 mm wrench to remove the bolts holding the tensioner on. After I put the new tensioner in, I had a problem. My hand was too big to reach in and grab the belt. Using a little ingenuity, I solved my problem with a bungee cord. I held the tensioner with the wrench in one hand and with the other hand, I fished the end of the bungee cord down to hook the belt and pull it up. Once I had the belt over the pulley, I slowly released the tensioner. I probably could have used anything that was long enough and had a hook on the end. The bungee cord was handy and it did the trick for me.
