How to Program a Ford Key Fob

Keyless entry has made entering vehicles easier and safer by allowing you to lock and unlock your vehicle remotely. The remote control is called a key fob--it's the push-button device attached to a key chain. A key fob needs to be programmed to control the functions of your vehicle. No special tools are required to program a Ford key fob, and the only training you need to program the fob is a skill you use every day when you enter your Ford.

Things You'll Need

  • Ford vehicle
  • Ford key fob
  • Enter your Ford vehicle and close the door.

  • Slide the ignition key attached to the Ford key fob into the ignition.

  • Turn the key on and off eight times (do not start the car), leaving the key in the "On" position after the eighth turn. The doors of your Ford will lock and unlock to show that the vehicle is in programming mode.

  • Press one of the key fob buttons within 20 seconds to program the key fob. The doors of the vehicle will lock. When they do, hit the unlock button to verify that the key fob is programmed.

  • Remove the key from the ignition and repeat the procedure for each Ford key fob you need to program.
