Volvo Mirror Removal

Removing or replacing mirrors in a Volvo is not an overly difficult task, but it will require some mechanical skills. Your side-view and rear-view mirrors may be operated via remote control or have other mechanical and electrical options, such as defrost/heat, temperature display and motorized position. Removing the mirrors is obviously required to replace them, but most states mandate both mirrors in order to pass state inspections.

Side-View Mirror Removal

  • Depending on the year and model of your Volvo, removal of the side-view mirror and its features may vary. In most cases, Volvos employ electric mirrors that you reposition by internal directional switches. These electrical mirrors require you to take off the interior door panel to access the wire harness to the mirror.

To remove the door panel, locate and remove the retention screws. Some models may require a Torx-head screwdriver. Plastic concealment tabs cover the retaining screws in the main body of the door panel; gently pry these off with a slotted screwdriver. Remove the screw in the door handle bezel. Gently pry the door off to unseat the snap-in retainers holding the panel to the door frame, using a trim panel tool or a small pry bar. After you have unseated the door panel from the door frame, disconnect any wires to the speakers and interior light and disconnect the door handle rod. Lift up on the door panel to fully remove it from the frame.

Remove the small triangular plastic panel that covers the inside door frame in the upper corner opposite the side-view mirror. This may feature a retaining screw or may just snap into place--much like the door panel. Locate and remove the three retaining nuts that secure the mirror studs to the door frame, using a ratchet and socket. Gently pry the mirror away from the door from the outside.

Rear-View Mirror Removal

  • Most Volvo rear-view mirrors are attached by a glued-on button to the windshield. Any electronic devices, if applicable, require you to detach the wire connections to remove the mirror without damaging the wires. Remove the rear panel of the rear-view mirror using a Phillips or Torx-head screwdriver. Once the wires are disconnected, remove the mirror.

Some Volvos have a small plastic cover that snaps onto the button. Pry the cover backward, and slide it off the grooved channel of the button. Remove the retaining screws, and slide the mirror off the button.
