Things Made Out of Tires

Old, used tires can have many uses. Since they are made of rubber and can contain environmentally harmful chemicals, the responsible choice means recycling them and not wastefully disposing of them. Most auto shops will recycle your old tires for you when you get new ones; learn the various applications for used tires, and turn your old treads into genuinely functional items.

Tire Swings

  • You have probably seen an old tire swing somewhere, whether in a movie, picture or perhaps in your own neighborhood. Hanging a tire from a tree might be the most common use of an old tire, and it certainly provides the most fun.

Dock Bumpers

  • Fishermen all over the world use old tires on their docks and boats as bumpers to avoid causing damage when a boat comes into its docking bay. Tug boats hang them all around the hull so they can get close to other ships and make contact without causing damage.

Art

  • Old tires can have a lot of applications in art. After all, ones man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Artists have used tires to create sculptures, statues and even household wall art.

Hand Bags

  • Leather is not the only material that makes great purses. Recycle the rubber from and make it into a new handbag, messenger bag or backpack.

Shoes

  • Old tires can also become shoes. The tread from a tire makes a great sole for a pair of durable and functional shoes or sandals. You can even make them yourself.
