The Pioneer AVIC-D1 is a double-din full-feature car stereo offering a 6.5-inch touch screen with adjustable display angles, GPS navigation, separate CD and DVD-ROM slots and 64 MB of internal memory. GPS navigation is achieved through two map DVDs, a GPS antenna and a vehicle speed sensor (VSS). In order for the AVIC-D1 to register vehicle movement and track the vehicle's position, the VSS needs to be connected.
Locate the black negative battery cable. Disconnect it from the battery using pliers.
Remove the plastic trim piece surrounding the Pioneer AVIC-D1 using a screwdriver to gently pry the trim piece away from the dashboard of the vehicle. Removing the plastic trim surrounding the stereo will vary depending upon the vehicle.
Remove the screws that secure the Pioneer AVIC-D1 to the dashboard using a screwdriver. Slide the stereo away from the dashboard. Do not disconnect any wires.
Remove the screws securing the plastic trim piece that surrounds the gauge cluster above the steering column using a screwdriver. Gently pry the plastic trim piece away from the dashboard. Slide the gauge cluster away from the dashboard by removing the screws holding it in place. Do not disconnect any wires. This step will vary slightly depending upon the vehicle.
Locate the pink VSS wire on the back of the Pioneer AVIC-D1. Route the wire from the stereo to the gauge cluster above the steering column through the dashboard of the vehicle.
Determine which wire is the speedometer wire by consulting a vehicle-specific gauge cluster wiring diagram. Use wire cutters to carefully remove a small section of the plastic protective coating, exposing bare wire. Wrap the bare wire end of the pink VSS wire around the bare section of speedometer wire. Wrap electrical tape around the connection covering the exposed wire.
Replace the gauge cluster and plastic trim piece. Slide the Pioneer AVIC-D1 back into place and secure it. Replace the plastic trim piece that surrounds the stereo. Reconnect the black negative battery cable.
