AVIC-D3 Troubleshooting

Pioneer's AVIC-D3 is a double DIN, all-in-one car receiver. The unit's 6.1-inch touchscreen is used for DVD playback and GPS navigation. The AVIC-D3 can be combined with a satellite receiver to enable real-time traffic updates and satellite radio reception. An additional Bluetooth adapter allows the unit to interface directly with your cell phone for hands-free calling that is integrated with your multimedia playback. There are a number of issues that can arise with a system as complicated as the AVIC-D3. Fortunately, diagnosing and solving these problems is usually a straightforward task.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper clip
  • Turn your vehicle on and press the power button on the receiver. If the unit does not turn on, turn your vehicle off and consult your vehicle's owner's manual for information about checking and replacing the audio receiver fuse. If the fuse is intact and the unit will not turn on, remove the receiver from your vehicle's dashboard according to the instructions in your vehicle's owner's manual. Ensure that all of the connections in the back of the receiver are snug. Visually inspect the wiring to ensure that it is still intact. Reinstall the unit. If the unit still does not turn on, unfold a paper clip and push one end of the paper clip into the recessed reset button to the right of the power button. Note that using the reset button will also erase all of the navigation data stored in the unit.

  • Navigate to the "Connection Status" screen in the "Hardware Info" subscreen of the "Settings" menu. The "GPS Antenna" field should read "OK." If it reads "NOK," move the GPS receiver to a location in your vehicle where it will have a clear view of the sky. Ensure that it is not covered in spray paint or vehicle wax.

  • Verify that the "Speed Pulse" field on the "Connection Status" screen is displaying the current speed of the vehicle. The "Parking Brake" field should display the current status of the vehicle's parking brake. The "Illumination" field should display "ON" when you the dashboard lights are turned on in your vehicle. The "Installation Position" field should display "OK." The "Back Signal" field should display either "High" or "Low" when your vehicle is shifted into reverse. If any of these fields are not displaying the correct value, your unit is not properly wired or mounted. Remove the receiver from the dashboard. Consult the receiver's wiring diagram or a Pioneer service center for wiring information.

  • Check the position of your vehicle's parking brake. Some of the unit's more advanced features such as DVD playback and GPS interaction will only work properly when the vehicle's parking brake is engaged. This is a safety feature designed to prevent drivers from being distracted by the unit.

  • Recalibrate the screen if the unit is not responding to touch input properly. Press the volume knob until the screen displays the "Audio Operation" screen, then press the menu button until the receiver displays the "AV Source" screen. Hold the menu button until the calibration screen appears. Touch and hold each arrow with the receiver's stylus to recalibrate the screen. Press the menu button once. After the unit has finished saving data, press and hold the menu button to return to the main screen or press the menu button again for a more detailed calibration.
