How to Install an Amplifier in a Ford Ranger

Ford Ranger owners who want a powerful car sound system have several ways to upgrade their stock stereo. Replacing the factory speakers will provide a clearer and louder sound, and a new stereo deck will offer greater capability and control; but every stereo system can be greatly improved by adding an aftermarket amplifier. An amplifier boosts the signal coming out of the stereo, providing more volume and a clearer signal through the speakers. Have a professional install your amp for a fee or do it yourself for free.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 mm wrench
  • Ford stereo removal keys
  • Wiring harness adapter
  • Amplifier installation kit
  • Plastic spacers
  • Speaker wire
  • Disconnect the grounding cable from the Ranger's negative battery terminal with a wrench. Rest the cable away from the battery until the amp is installed.

  • Attach the amplifier wiring kit ring terminal to the positive battery lead. Route the wiring from the ring terminal through the firewall and into the cabin of the truck.

  • Remove the factory speaker. Squeeze the Ford removal keys and insert the prongs into the holes on either side of the stereo face. Pull outward on the keys and slide the stereo from the dashboard.

  • Disconnect the stereo wiring from the back of the stock deck and connect the wiring to a wiring harness adapter. Connect the wiring harness adapter leads to the back of the radio.

  • Connect the turn-on lead and signal cable, from the amplifier wiring kit, to the wiring harness adapter.

  • Feed the amplifier cables, from the wiring harness adapter, through the opening in the back left panel of the stereo mounting dock. The wiring will emerge in the footwell area on the passenger's side.

  • Position the stereo into the stereo mounting dock by pushing the unit into the dash and removing the Ford removal keys.

  • Place the amplifier beneath the driver or passenger's seat of the truck. Place plastic spacers beneath the amp to allow for ventilation.

  • Connect the signal and power cables to the amplifier. Plug the turn-on lead into the amp.

  • Connect speaker wire to the amplifier and route them to the speakers you wish to have impacted by the boosted signal. Connect the wiring to the speakers.

  • Place the grounding cable clamp around the negative lead post. Tighten the clamp to the post with the wrench.
