The Ford F550 is a dependable pickup truck with a host of useful and dependable features. However, over time the stereo in the F550 may begin to act up and require replacing. You may also be modifying the truck and need to remove the old radio in order to install a new sound system. Luckily, stereo removal in the F550 is fairly straightforward and easy for most any home stereo technician with access to a few specialty tools.
First, disconnect and remove the surrounding dashboard trim. Use a screwdriver to remove all of the mounting bolts in the trim that surrounds the middle dash of the truck, then slide a flat-head screwdriver under the edge of the trim and lift it up to snap the connectors loose. Lift the trim off of the radio, slide it out of the cockpit and set aside until you reinstall it.
Next, remove the radio from the mounting bracket inside the dashboard. Use two DIN tools to slide in the slots on either side of the radio and press inward and back toward the dashboard. This releases the two arms holding the radio in on either side. Then pull on the front of the radio. It should slide freely out of the mounting bracket. Slowly and carefully pull the stereo partway out of the mounting bracket.
The last part of the process is to disconnect the electrical system. Make sure your truck's battery cables are unhooked. Then slide the radio out further so that you can disconnect the electrical connection on the back and pull the radio all the way out of the mounting bracket. Use a screwdriver to remove the mounting bracket hardware and then cut the end of the electrical connection off.
