Ford vehicles equipped with the Ford Premium sound system come with an amplified stereo that provides an upgraded output versus the standard audio system. For Taurus owners looking to replace or repair their vehicle's amplifier, you need to locate and remove the amplifier from the trunk. You can trust the removal to an audio professional, or you can do it yourself and save the cost of labor.
Before performing any removal or installation of components connected to the electrical system, you must first disconnect the negative battery cable from the vehicle's battery. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the cable's clamp. Remove the clamp from the negative battery lead and rest it away from the battery until your work is finished.
The amplifier is connected to the Ford stereo by a turn-on lead and signal cables. You need to remove the stereo to disconnect these cables and replace them if you are replacing the amplifier.
Use the Ford DIN removal tools to pull the stereo from the dash. Insert the tools into the vertically stacked holes on the face of the stereo. Pull outward on the tools while pulling the stereo away from the dash. Pull far enough to access the wire connections to the rear of the radio.
Disconnect the amplifier cables from the rear of the stereo and feed them through the mounting bracket to the floor of the Taurus. Remove the panels that secure the carpeting to the floor of the Taurus with a trim panel removal tool. The amplifier cables will be laid beneath the carpeting to the location of the amp in the trunk. Replace the panels by hand.
Replace the stereo into the dock in the dash by pushing it into the opening until it locks into place. Pull the DIN removal tools from the face of the radio.
The amplifier of the Ford Premium sound system is located in the trunk of the Taurus. Open the trunk and locate the amp behind the rear seats. Pull the carpeting away from the rear panel to access the amplifier. Disconnect the cables (power supply, signal cable and turn-on lead) from the amplifier.
Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the four screws on the amplifier mounting bracket and remove the amplifier.
Remove the wiring to the amplifier either by pulling them through the trunk opening or via the panels at the door openings. If you choose to remove the cables from the door openings, you will need to remove the panels on both sides of the Taurus as the power supply cable and signal cables will be routed on opposite sides of the vehicle to prevent interference.
