How to Add Heated Seats to a Car

You can add a heated seat to your car by installing an after-market seat heating pad under the upholstery or seat covers on the passenger and driver's side seats. The heating pads are controlled by a switch that needs to be wired to the battery or your vehicle's electrical system.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Heated seat kit
  • Scissors
  • Utility knife
  • Power drill
  • Open the hood of the vehicle and set the support bar. Disconnect the positive and negative battery cables from the battery terminals with the wrench.

  • Remove the screws used to secure the seat to the floor, using the wrench. Lift up the seat and take it out of the vehicle.

  • Find the connecting screws for the seat cushion and seat back. Remove them.

  • Disengage any upholstery clips and then disconnect any remaining connections on the seat cushion or the seat back with the screwdriver. Remove the cover from the seat cushion and the seat back.

  • Position the heating pad on the front of the seat back and on the seat cushion with the labels facing up. Place the cutting stencil on top of the heating pad. Cut out one to five 1-inch holes from the heating pad, using the scissors or a utility knife. A hole is needed wherever a connection is needed from the cover to the seat cushion.

  • Place two strips of the adhesive tape from the seat kit over the heating pad. The adhesive tape should cover the surface of the heating pad. Cut a ½-inch hole in the center of the 1-inch holes. This will allow the seat cover to attach to the foam seat cushion or seat back.

  • Flip the heating element over so the label side is facing down on the seat cushion and back. Remove the adhesive backing on the tape. Secure the heating pad to the seat cushion and back of the seat.

  • Fit the cover back on the seat cushion and seat back. Secure the cover to the seat cushion and seat back with the included cable ties.

  • Place the seat cushion and seat back together and tighten the connecting screws. Plug the wires on the heating elements to the connectors on the wiring harness. Secure the wiring harness to the frame of the seat with the screwdriver.

  • Run the electrical wire from the wiring harness to the firewall at the front of the vehicle. Drill a hole in the firewall with the power drill. Pull the wire through the hole and then insert the switch.

  • Remove the nut from the bolt on the end of the battery cables. Insert the loop on the end of the electrical wires onto the bolts. Place the nuts back onto the bolts. Place the cables back on the battery terminals and tighten with the wrench.
