How to Remove the Radio on a Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot's factory stereo system is a capable unit that can control iPod and Mp3 players, satellite radio receivers and multi-disc changers. To connect these aftermarket devices, it is necessary to remove the stereo deck to make the connections. Whether adding components, repairing the stereo, or upgrading your system, you can pay a professional to remove the stereo, or do it yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Flat screwdriver or trim panel tool
  • 10-millimeter socket and ratchet
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable from the Pilot's battery, using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Loosen the cable's clamp and completely remove it from the negative lead post.

  • Remove the dash trim panel on the upper right side of the stereo, using a flat tool (screwdriver or trim panel tool).

  • Grab the dash panel that surrounds the stereo with two hands at the bottom. Pull the panel free and work your hands around the perimeter of the panel until it is completely free from the dash.

  • Remove the four bolts at the corners of the stereo mounting bracket, using a 10-millimeter socket and ratchet. Pull the stereo from the dock far enough to reach the wiring connections in the rear.

  • Pull the wire groups from the stereo by hand. Grab the wire groups by the plastic binders, not the wires themselves. Remove the stereo deck completely from the Honda's dash.
