The Nissan Quest has available audio options to fit a variety of consumers. Still, for specific stereo tastes and in the event of a malfunction, there may arise the need for Quest owners to install a new stereo. You can have a technician at an aftermarket retailer perform the switch, or you can do it yourself and save the cost of labor.
Disconnect the negative battery cable (or grounding cable) from the Nissan's battery. The grounding cable is the black cable that connects the battery to the frame of the vehicle. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the bolt holding the clamp of the cable around the negative battery lead. Remove the clamp from the lead.
Remove the shift lever from the center console. Pull the metal ring at the base of the shift lever upward, while pulling the entire shift lever up and away from the console.
Remove the screws in the glove box that secure the center console panels. Open the glove box. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the two screws located on the left edge of the compartment's opening.
Remove the dash panel screws located under the left side of the steering column. A small Phillips-head screwdriver will work best.
Remove the panels under the driver's side dash. Use a trim pry tool or large flat screwdriver to pry the panels free from the dashboard.
Remove the black panels at the base of the center console. Use a flat screwdriver to pry the panels free.
Remove the two Phillips-head screws found behind the lower console panels. The screws are near the corners of the console.
Remove the upper console panel by pushing the forward-most side of the oval panel with your thumbs. The two clips holding the panel in place will be disconnected enabling you to lift the panel free from the top.
Remove the two screws (now exposed) at the top corners of the center console using a Phillips-head screwdriver.
Remove the small dash panel found to the left of the cup holder. The panel can be removed with a flat screwdriver or trim pry tool.
Remove the entire front portion of the center console dash panel. The panel will be free of any connections once all of the screws and panels in the previous steps have been removed.
Remove the four 10 mm bolts securing the stereo in place. The four bolts are located in pairs on either side of the stereo unit.
Pull the stereo from the dash and disconnect the wiring connection in the rear. There will be four wiring groups connected: the antenna, the speakers, the amplifier, and the power supply. They can all be easily detached by hand.
Connect the wiring groups to a wiring harness adapter. The adapter will have clearly marked outlets to receive the Nissan wiring.
Insert a single DIN radio mounting dash kit. The kit will fit into the dock left by the now removed stereo. It will provide a congruent slot for the new stereo deck.
Connect the wiring harness adapter's free connections (corresponding to those input from the vehicle) to the new stereo unit. Slide the new deck into the mounting kit. Replace the four bolts to secure the new stereo into the Nissan Quest's dash.
Replace the center console dash panel. The panel will rest in place until the other panels are clipped in.
Replace the small dash panel near the cup-holder. The panel will snap into place with a moderate amount of force.
Replace the two screws at the top of the center console, along with the oval center console faceplate.
Replace the two screws at the bottom of the center console panel. Reattach the bottom (black) center console panel.
Replace the two driver's side panels under the steering column, by hand. The panels will snap back into place.
Replace the two screws inside the glove box.
Replace the gear shift lever. Slide the lever back into place while holding the metal ring on the shaft of the lever in the up position. Once the lever is pushed all the way into the opening, release the metal ring to secure the shift lever.
Reconnect the grounding cable to the Nissan battery. Place the cable's clamp around the negative lead. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to tighten the bolt on the clamp. The clamp should be tightened just enough that the clamp cannot be moved around the negative lead post by hand.
